Pollution may be defined as material that is harmful for life. One pollutant that has not yet received much attention is excessive light, or light pollution. Many people experience light as a pollutant. I present the case of a family who live next door to a sports field where large new light standards were added. The family assert that it has greatly interrupted their sleep and their social life. Their lack of control in the matter is very stressful. When I sought research evidence to examine the family’s claims, I could not find a single study of light pollution. Light can be beneficial, but so fire; too much of a good think is a bad thing. It is time for environmental psychologists to begin the scientific study of light pollution.
