For many women the city, a concentration of social, cultural, and economic powers, is a source of independence, freedom and liberation as it offers them employment opportunities, freedom of mobility, and accessibility to cultural and educational options. However, the city is also a locus of alienation, violence and threat, creating fear, anxiety and frustration for many women. The aim of the symposium is to discuss the relations of gender and city. The discussion would evolve around a variety of issues related to the city as a physical, social and personal place.
