The design of the built environment has a direct impact on the future of the global environment. Design professionals and consumers acknowledge the need for responsible solutions to design problems. However, little attention has been paid to the interior designer's role and responsibility for designing healthier interior environments and the complexity this brings to a design project. Some scholars suggest that among the design practitioners, focus has been on the building envelopes and building systems. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the significance of the near environment and the role of the interior designer in the design of environmentally intelligent systems.
