Landscape remediation is a very important task in the densely built up agglomeration around the big cities leipzig and halle in east-Germany in the wake of lignite mining, which for decades revaged enormous areas. Open mining pits and carbo-chemical plants caused enormous emissions and quality of the population has suffered. After the german reunification, the socio-economic changes, the lignite industries declined in importance. Thus, the landscape has undergone tremendous changes. First post-mining landscapes such as recreation areas are visible. These new conditionsencourage the residents to take part in revitalization of their communities. There is a close link between social renewal and remediated natural surroundings.
