Formal and Informal Settlements in Tanzania Planned neighbourhoods in Tanzania depict a variety of urban typologies, some of which are divorced from its context and hence do not function well. This is attributed to planning concepts and ideology that were inspired by western ideas and the waves of 'modernism'. Informal settlements which emerge independent of planned areas are organic in their development pattern follow a certain logic which is yet to be examined and developed. This paper attempts to examine the relevance of typologies in planned areas and make comparisons between formal and informal neighbourhoods in Tanzania.
