This paper contrasts the experience of rootedness across two cultures. This follows work on the experience of rootedness (Moore, 1998) and work which explored Galician identity (Romay, Garcia-Mira & Azurmendi, 1999). The paper examines the type and qualities of current connections to places for young adults living in La Coruna and Middlesbrough. Central hypotheses are that there will be more a shared emphasis on the city, regional and national levels of rootedness than on the local. Furthermore, it is expected there will be a difference in focus of the level of rootedness, with regional being more salient to the Galician students than those in England.
