The city of Bursa contains some of the oldest and most original examples of Turkish monumental and vernacular architecture, in a setting combining tradition, culture and history. Bursa's present appearance is a synthesis created by different civilizations. Cultural synthesis is more in evidence here than in most other Turkish cities.Today Bursa's unique historic identity has suffered considerably as a result primarily of industrialization and a high rate of urban immigration, bringing rapid and unplanned urbanization. The paper, therefore, examines the spatial composition of Bursa on the urban scale and discusses the cultural factors that have prompted changes in this composition within the historical process.
