The individual appropriation of space is understood as an element contributing to build the identity in a network of solidarity and opposition. Hence the social transaction governing the relations between groups is a key-element of the explanation. To do this, it is necessary to distinguish between analytical concepts and con cepts organizing the perception of space in daily life such is the private! public opposition. This opposition allows the actors to elaborate their percep tion of the normal and the legitimate. Our analysis concepts will begin from the open/closed qualification and we shall associate it to three objects whose difference and interdependence will have to be found the interactional network -the region or territory- the physical characteristics of space. The analysis will be applied to an open-apace school experiment in Montreal, through which we shall attempt to characterize the relations between school and lodging and to situate the stake of the encounter in the spaces interme diate between school and lodging that are nevertheless devalued.
