The purpose of this paper is to present research results on the transmission of the culture of children's plays and games in an urban environment. This transmission can be examined in terms of how far and where play groups move; in Yl local play groups are organised and in terms of changes in the contents of the tradition of plays and games. The units of observation are cultures f plays and games in seperate residential areas, their development and relation to the physical and functional structure of the city (Syvanan 1981).
