The central question in this paper is: how does the suburban environment - in conperison with the urban environment - influence social contacts? Referring to some studies in the U.S. and the Netherlands it is concluded that there are significant differences in neighbour contacts. Even after controlling for individual and contextual characteristics significant differences remain. Comparing the social contacts before and after the move an increase otneighbour contacts has been observed, together with a decrease of contacts with -family and friends, especially for those who moved over a larger distance. Finally, some notions will be put forward with regard to the role ofenvironment in making social conctacts.
