The ideological and utilitarian functions 6f school space is analysed in the case of Greek school -buildings. Observations in urban and rural schools show the existence of different subcultures corresponding to similar more or less types of buildings but different usages. The educational outcome nontheless in terms of socialization remains the 'apis bit is iflintained through different processes. -Ja the rural ease through obedience and acceptance of the existing hierarchical structure, while in the urban, through a do facto incorporation; great numbers of marginal pupils who reject the existing hierarchies, incorporate passively because they fail to promote other leas authoritarian models.
