The meaning or function of urban environments for the selfconcept of 100 persons was assessed using the method of - auto-photography. The role of urban environments for the self-concept is seen as part of a- total environment, consisting of people, things and environments that contribute to an 'ecology of the self'. Subjects had to describe themselves by way of seven photographs of self-relevant aspects of their environment. The analysis allows an assesssent of the relative contribution of urban environments for self-understanding and self-prese.tation as compared to other aspects of the physical environment and the -social environment.
