"Previous experience in South Africa during upgrading programmesshowed that conventional architectural sketches and models wereoften misinterpreted by the people within an informal settlement.Consequently, the National Building Research Institute is seekingto develop appropriate illustrative techniques and suitable toolsto investigate individual housing needs, preferences and priorities.A pilot study was undertaken to determine how residents illustratetheir homes. The first phase involved two classes of school-children;each child drew his or her home so that "a stranger would recogniseit". A group of adults performed a similar exercise. This paper willdiscuss the way in which the drawings were analysed, the findings.and the potential value of the technique."
