Sustainability Science needs a theoretical framework, or meta-theory, of human action that allows for integration of multidisciplinary research findings. A model framework of human action that assimilates the basic assumptions of ecological psychology – in particular its transactional and evolutionary perspective and its definition of agent-inenvironment as the unit of analysis – is outlined, and illustrative examples of possible applications are given.
